Ejisu By-Election: Electoral Commission Sets April 30 For ‘Showdown’

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that the by-election for the Ejisu constituency in the Ashanti region will take place on April 30, 2024.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set April 13, 2024, as the date for their primary election to choose a candidate from a pool of nine contenders.

Nominations were open from Tuesday, April 2, 2024, to Thursday, April 4, 2024, and all nine candidates successfully submitted their bids before the deadline.

The election has become possible following the death of John Kumah, the Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Ejisu in the Ashanti Region. He died after a short illness on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

He had been present in Parliament the week that he passed on and was scheduled to contribute to the Budget debate. However, he had visited his constituency, Ejisu, in the Ashanti Region, to celebrate the Independence anniversary.

Unfortunately, his health worsened during this time. An ambulance was called to transport him to Accra, but his condition became critical during the journey.

As a result, the ambulance diverted to the Suhum Government Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Thursday, March 7, 2024. His body has been taken to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
