Former AS Roma forward, Felix Afena-Gyan, who now plies his trade for US Cremonese, has reportedly turned down an invitation to join the Ghana U23 team for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifications.
The 20-year-old was called up to strengthen the Black Meteors team ahead of back-to-back matches against Algeria for a spot in the U23 Africa Cup of Nations this year.
Despite being invited to join the rest of the squad by his club, the former AS Roma youngster turned down the offer.
According to the snippet of information culled from Ghanasoccernet, the Serie A club has received all necessary travel documents from the Ghana FA but the player has chosen not to show up to train with Ibrahim Tanko’s team.
The development has sparked massive speculations online unanimously revealing that the player is not happy that he was snubbed for the World Cup tournament staged in Qatar, having been part of the squad that triumphed over Nigeria in the playoffs.
Afena-Gyan signed a long-term contract with Cremonese, a recently promoted Serie A team, on August 29, 2022. He got his first goal for the team on October 20 in the extra period of a 4-2 Coppa Italia victory over Modena.
The forward got the equalizer (2-2) for Cremonese in the 87th minute of the round of 16 matches of the cup against Napoli on January 17, 2023, sending the game into overtime.
Afena-Gyan himself scored on his team’s final penalty try to win the game on penalties and advance Cremonese to the tournament quarterfinals.
