How I Got My Stage Name- Basketmouth Reveals

Basketmouth is presently in Ghana for his latest standup comedy event dubbed ‘Baskemouth Unprovoked’ scheduled for April 8 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Ahead of the show which promises to be woven in the typical Basketmouth fabric, the veteran Nigerian comedian spoke to Caleb Giovani and AJ Sarpong on Monday, March 27 on the 3FM Drive.

He made some revelations about himself including how he came by his stage name ‘Basketmouth.’ According to him, the name Basketmouth was adapted after a performance that turned into a trolling contest.

“I was on stage performing when people started heckling and I got upset then I started trolling them back for almost thirty minutes. After the show one guy walked up to me and said dude you have a basket mouth…I said that’s a good name,” he revealed.

He also mentioned that he used to be a rapper before he switched to comedy following the recommendation of a fan years ago.

“What happened was I was into music before then, I was a rapper as far back as 1995 and went by the name Lyricist but the kind of music we were making wasn’t proper because I was mixing Hip-hop and Afrobeats which is what people are doing right now but then it sounded a bit off,” he said.
