How I Went To Prison Because Of Kantanka – Wode Maya Finally Speaks
Ghanaian content creator Wode Maya has emotionally recounted how he was imprisoned and made to sponsor a funeral of a Ghanaian man his team inadvertently killed, all because of Kantanka.
The Ghanaian content producer stated that Kantanka makes him unhappy and that he believes Ghanaians only support you when you succeed in life.
“Anytime I hear Kantanka, I definitely become sad because there’s more to the story. I don’t think I put everything out there. I think I need to copyright this quote saying ‘Africans don’t support the dream. They only support you when you’re successful,” he stated.
He continued, “It feels good when you’re doing something and your people support you, but it doesn’t come out that way.”
In an interview with Helen Appiah-Ampofo on TV3’s Twitter space, the vlogger recounts his experience when he reached out to Kantanka to offer them a free promotion since he is an advocate for ‘Made In Ghana’ products.
“When I started promoting ‘Made In Africa’ products, I reached out to them, knowing that Ghana makes cars. I felt that it was an exciting thing to put out there. I went there more than 10 times. I wrote letters and emails though I believe Africans don’t read emails. When it comes to stuff like these, they always want you to go there directly. So I went there with the team; I wasn’t even charging and said, ‘Let me put Kantanka on the map if surely, this is made in Ghana’,” he shared.
He continued to tell the story, adding that the famous automibile company kept throwing them aside rather than providing them what they wanted. He also related how one of his drivers killed a man who was returning from his farm.
According to him, “Anytime people ask me about this whole Kantanka story, I don’t want to talk about it because till today, there’s so much pain. I’ve been to prison because of Kantanka. We spent a weekend at a police station at Cape Coast and I had to sponsor a whole funeral.”
Wrapping up his reminiscing about the hurtful experience, the Ghanaian digital media influencer mentioned how some netizens criticize him for promoting Nigerian products. He added that he barely talks about the experience as it gets him super emotional.
“Ghanaians are always insulting me and asking why I’m promoting a Nigerian brand instead of that of Ghana, but so many people don’t know my story with Kantanka. They can’t deny the fact that they did this because I was there so many times. I hardly talk about this issue because anytime I hear Kantanka, I get emotional. I just don’t want to bring the pain back again,” he indicated.
