JJ Rawlings’ Name Pops Up In Kennedy Agyapong’s Presidential Bid

Silas Asiedu, a member of the Kennedy Agyapong campaign team in the Ashanti Region, has expressed his perspective on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, likening him to a ‘polished version’ of Jerry John Rawlings.

Asiedu emphasizes that this is precisely the kind of leadership Ghana requires in order to catalyze a positive transformation in the nation’s prospects.

In light of the disappointment displayed by the country’s current crop of political leaders, he contends that the NPP leader has the necessary leadership mindset and abilities to restore Ghana to its former glory.

Speaking on Julius Caesar Anadem’s Cup of Tea with Show on Ultimate FM, Mr Asiedu praised Kennedy Agyapong’s leadership abilities in front of the NPP flagbearer election on November 4th.

“People don’t understand Ken and say all kinds of things about him. He is a firm and strategic forward leader. I dare say he is a refined JJ Rawlings, very pragmatic”

“Rawlings was raw with attitude, but Ken has a proven track record with the business he has set up and continues to set up. The people love Ken for how impactful he is with his contribution to the counter, not just the NPP” he noted.

“Ken is the leader we need in Ghana today after all the disappointments around, it is not about partisan politics anymore but it’s about the development of this country and the fulfilment of promises and opportunities for the youth”, he touted his political credentials.

Jerry John Rawlings was a distinguished Ghanaian military officer, aviator, and politician who held significant leadership roles in the country. He assumed power in 1979 following a successful coup d’état and subsequently led Ghana as a flight lieutenant of the Ghana Air Force.

Notably, he also orchestrated an unsuccessful coup attempt against the ruling military government shortly before scheduled democratic elections in 1979. After temporarily relinquishing power to a civilian government, Rawlings reassumed control of the nation on 31 December 1981 as the chairman of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC).

During his tenure, he led the military junta until 1992, at which point he resigned from the military and established the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Rawlings then became the first president of the Fourth Republic, serving two terms in office.

In accordance with the Ghanaian Constitution, he endorsed his vice-president, John Atta Mills, as a presidential candidate in 2000. Rawlings’ contributions extended beyond Ghana’s borders, as he also served as the African Union envoy to Somalia. Regrettably, he passed away in 2020 at the age of 73, and the nation paid tribute to his legacy by organizing a state funeral to honor his remarkable achievements.
