John Dumelo Turns Okada Man

Actor and politician John Setor Dumelo has been sighted campaigning for the party’s candidate in the Assin North by-elections.

On Tuesday, June 27, there will be a by-electio n with NDC vying to keep the seat.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the 2020 general election stormed the area to throw his weight behind his compatriot James Gyakye Quayson who is running for re-election as a member of parliament.

Dumelo tweeted about his motorcycle campaign ride through Assin Kushea. He is heard shouting the slogan of the NDC: ‘3y3 Zu’ with some supporters, not captured on camera, responding ‘3y3 Za’.

The Supreme Court previously explained in detail why it believed James Gyakye Quayson’s election was invalid since, according to the law, he was unable to run for the Assin North seat in 2020.

According to the ruling by the apex court, the date the Electoral Commission (EC) opens nominations, not the election or the swearing-in of MPs in Parliament, is when Article 94(2)(a) of the 1992 Constitution, which prohibits someone who owes allegiance to another country from becoming an MP, goes into effect.

Due to his failure to renounce his Canadian citizenship before applying to run for the Assin North seat in October 2020 when the EC opened nominations for candidates, the court determined that Mr. Quayson was constitutionally prohibited from running for the seat.

“We state without any equivocation that Article 94(2) (a) means that to be qualified to be a Member of Parliament, a citizen of Ghana must not hold any other citizenship at the time when nominations are opened by the Electoral Commission for registration of candidates for election as Members of Parliament,” the court held.

The unanimous decision of the seven-member panel was authored by Justice Nene Amegatcher, with Justice Jones Dotse presiding and Justices Mariama Owusu, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, Prof. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi and Barbara Ackah-Yensu, as members.
