Minority MPs Won’t Support Akufo-Addo’s Reckless Borrowing – Sammy Gyamfi

The Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has stated that his party will not vote to approve the new loans President Akufo-Addo’s administration has presented to Parliament.

Sammy Gyamfi said that the Akufo-Addo administration’s reckless borrowings cannot be allowed to bring down the country. The party believes that the current debt levels are unsustainable for the country.

“This is totally unacceptable and I am happy that the NDC members on the Finance Committee of Parliament have rejected it and said they will not approve it… So I know they’ll wash their hands off it and have nothing to do with it. What I can assure Ghanaians is that the next NDC government will not engage in such reckless and irresponsible borrowings.” Sammy Gyamfi stated.

On May 2, 2023, lawmakers will meet again for a special session to discuss what Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin has called “urgent parliamentary business.”

A statement from Parliament read, “In exercise of the power conferred on the Speaker by order 42(3) of the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana, I, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, do hereby direct that Parliament shall, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, be recalled from recess to sit on Tuesday, the 2nd day of May 2023, at ten o’clock in the forenoon, at Parliament House, Accra, to consider urgent parliamentary business.”
