More ‘Wahlaa’ For NPP Government As #OccupyBoG Demo Goes Live

Following the recent #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration, a new protest is scheduled to take place targeting the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

The Minority Caucus in Parliament and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are organizing this demonstration to demand the resignation of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, and his two deputies.

Despite police orders, the protest leaders have stated their intention to march to the Central Bank premises to present their petition to the Governor’s representatives. This action is in response to the Central Bank’s loss of GH¢60.81 billion in the 2022 fiscal year and the expenditure of over $250 million on the construction of a new headquarters at North Ridge.

The police have designated Obra Spot as the starting point for the protest, which will conclude at Independence Square. However, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, has stated in an interview with Citi News that the protest leaders will proceed to the Central Bank to present their petition.

“Our leaders led by Cassiel Ato Forson and the leaders of the other groups will go to the frontage of the Central Bank, meet representatives of the Governor, and present our petition. Nobody ever said we were going to enter the Bank of Ghana with all the protesters and demonstrators,” Mr. Gyamfi said.

Relatedly, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Papa Owusu Ankomah, evaded the ‘onslaught’ of demonstrators who picketed at his office on Friday, September 20, 2023.

The London version of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration took a dramatic turn after the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) allegedly organized ‘anti-protesters’ to thwart the efforts of the demonstrators and cause disaffection for them in the eyes of the Western media.

Several Ghanaian citizens residing in the United Kingdom took part in the #OccupyJulorBiHouse protest outside the High Commission of Ghana in London but things did not go the way they envisaged.

A video circulating on Twitter depicts the gathering of Ghanaians, some of whom are waving Ghana flags, while others sing patriotic songs using megaphones and portable sound systems. The protesters consist of individuals of various ages.

However, Papa Owusu Ankomah, seemingly taken aback by the fervor of the demonstration, opted to avoid direct engagement with the protesters rather than engaging in dialogue. A video captured him departing the scene, flanked by law enforcement officers.
