MzVee’s Biography

Vera Hamenoo-Kpeda (born June 23, 1992) is a Ghanaian singer, afropop, dancehall, and R&B artist best known by her stage name MzVee.

MzVee was born in South La Estates, Accra to industrialist Ernest Hamenoo-Kpeda and caterer Florence Hamenoo-Kpeda. She has two older sisters and a sibling and attended St. Martin de Porres School in Accra’s Dansoman neighbourhood as a child [reference needed]. She transferred to St. Mary’s Girls Senior High School and is currently enrolled at Ghana Telecom University to pursue business administration.

Music Career

MzVee first appeared on the Ghanaian music landscape as the lead singer of Lynx Entertainment’s girl band D3 in the summer of 2012.

The band disbanded at the end of 2013 due to the scholastic obligations of its young members, whose hits “Good Girls Gone Bad” and “Gyani Gyani” were immensely popular.

MzVee began her solo career with the release of her debut single ‘Borkor Borkor’ in January 2014. She subsequently released the successful single ‘Natural Girl’ and won the ‘Unsung Artiste Award’ at the 2014 Ghana Music Awards. Her debut album was published in November 2014 and features collaborations with Stonebwoy, VIP, Shatta Wale, Richie Mensah, M.anifest, and Didier Awadi, among others.

Her début solo album includes the hit singles “Borkor Borkor” (meaning “Slowly”), “Natural Girl,” and “Dancehall Queen.”MzVee was contracted to the record label Lynx Entertainment and won New Artist of the Year at the 2015 Ghana Music Awards. In 2019, she parted ties with Lynx Entertainment. Currently, she is a solitary artist.

After the success of her award-winning debut album, MzVee issued her second album, Verified, to rave reviews in November 2015. The album earned MzVee seven nominations at the 2016 Ghana Music Awards, including ‘Album of the Year’ and ‘Record of the Year’ for the Efya-assisted single ‘Abofra’. In May of 2017, her highly anticipated third album DaaVee was released.

When MzVee returned from her 2-year depression-induced musical hiatus, she also announced that she would be publishing two albums. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she obviously could not issue the two albums as promised.

She was able to issue a single album titled inVeencible. On December 11, 2020, the album featuring Sarkodie, Mugeez, Efya, Medikal, Kelvyn Boy, Kojo Funds, as well as Falz and Navy Kenzoo was released. She collaborated with Trace TV in March 2021 to premiere the music video for her song “You Alone.”

MzVee’s fifth album, 10 Thirty, was released on June 24, 2022. It was inspired by her 10th year as a musician and her 30th birthday. The ten–track album 10 Thirty featured Nigerian artists Bella Shmurda, Yemi Alade, and Tiwa Savage, as well as Ghanaian artists Stonebwoy and Kofi Kinaata.

Her powerful vocal abilities earned her a nomination for ‘Female Vocalist of the Year’ at the 2015 Ghana Music Awards and the ‘Most Promising Act’ award at the 2015 Ghana Music Honours. She received the award for ‘Best Female Vocalist of the Year’ at the 2015 Ghanaian dancehall awards, BASS awards, and is regarded as one of the scene’s leaders. Her signature natural African hair and hit single ‘Natural Girl’ have made her an inspiration to young women across Africa who want to embrace their natural appearance.

Awards & Recognitions

MzVee’s meteoric ascent to the top continued in June 2015 when she was nominated for ‘Best International New Artist’ at the BET Awards 2015. This brand-new fan-voted category honours rising talents from across the international footprint of the channel.

MzVee was designated World Bank Ambassador for their ‘End Extreme Poverty Campaign’ in October 2015.[31] She released the official campaign song ‘End Poverty’ and became a World Bank #Music4Dev Guest Artist, a position previously held by award-winning artists such as D’Banj and Fally Ipupa.

MzVee was included on MTV Base’s 2016 list of the top African artists to watch. This list featured the African artists who achieved unprecedented success in 2015. She was also nominated for ‘Best Urban Artist’ at the 2016 KORA Music Awards and received seven nominations at the 2016 Ghana Music Awards, including Songwriter of the Year alongside Richie Mensah and Efya, Album of the Year and Best Female Vocalist.

MzVee became the first Ghanaian female musician to be nominated for a major BET Award on May 20, 2016 when she was nominated for the BET Awards 2016 – Best International Act: Africa category. She was also nominated for Best Female at the MTV Africa Music Awards in October 2016.
