Nana Addo’s Policies Helped Ghana Regain Top Spot As Africa’s Largest Gold Producer – Jinapor

Ghanaian lawyer and Member of Parliament for the Damongo Constituency, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has stated that the measures implemented by Nana Addo helped Ghana regain the top spot as Africa’s largest gold producer and the 10th largest in the world.

According to the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Ghana’s gold production increased by 32% in 2022, putting it once again in the position of Africa’s leading gold producer and the world’s 10th largest producer.

Chamber president Joshua Mortoti stated in 2022 that both major and small businesses in Ghana had experienced growth in revenue. He also mentioned that production in the large-scale gold sector was at a record-breaking level.

Speaking on the matter, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abu Jinapor credited President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s policies with helping Ghana reclaim its position as Africa’s top gold producer.

According to his statement, large-scale mining businesses’ gold production rose from 2.72 million ounces in 2021 to 3.08 million ounces in 2022, while small-scale exports of gold increased from 98,001 ounces to 655,656 ounces during the same time period. There was a major increase in production from 2021 to 2022, with total gold output rising from 2.82 million ounces to 3.74 million ounces.

He said that the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, which had been put on care and maintenance in 2016, was reopened in 2019 thanks to the involvement of the President of the Republic, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He further said that in October 2022, the Bibiani Mine was reopened after being dormant for seven years. Ghana’s new position on the continent is largely due to the reopening of these two mines, the increase in production at some other mines, and the reduction of the withholding tax rate on unprocessed gold by small-scale miners from 3% to 1.5% in 2015. All of these things have helped Ghana a lot.
