Okyeame Kwame’s Biography

Kwame Nsiah-Apau (born April 17, 1976), also known as Okyeame Kwame and Rap Doctor, is a musician, songwriter, creative director, and entrepreneur from Ghana.

Apau was born in Kumasi, Ghana’s Ashanti Region. He is the middle sibling of six. His two younger siblings, Kwaku Nsiah Boamah also known as “Flowking Stone” and Kwaku Nsiah Amankwah also known as “Kunta Kinte,” also perform as a duo under the moniker “Bradez.”

Growing up, Kwame’s parents expected him to become a doctor, but he developed an interest in rap music at a very young age, writing his own songs and performing in Kumasi while attending Anglican Senior High School.

Kwame is a graduate of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he majored in Akan and Sociology and received formal music training from Dr. Daniel Amponsah a.k.a. Agya Koo Nimo. Agya Koo Nimo taught him classical guitar and African music philosophy.

He then matriculated at the University of Ghana and earned a master’s degree in Strategic Marketing in 2016.

In recognition of his professional use of marketing in the creative industries, he is also an associate co-opted member of the Ghanaian Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Music Career

1997 marked his rise to fame as a member of the hiplife duet “Akyeame” alongside fellow Ghanaian Daniel Kofi Amoateng (under the stage name Okyeame Kofi). They recorded the albums “Nyansapo” (“Witty Knot”, 1997), “Nkonsonkonson” (“Shackles”, 1998), “Ntoaso” (“Continuity”, 2000), and “Apam Foforo” (“New Testament”, 2002) collectively.

Since 2004, he has performed solo in Accra under his own record label, One Mic Entertainment. Notable Ghanaian highlife and hiplife performers such as Daddy Lumba, Kojo Antwi, and Ofori Amponsah were also featured.

Okyeame Kwame enraged fellow Ghanaian rapper Obrafour by proclaiming himself B.R.A (Best Rapper Alive) in a song he recorded after winning Artist of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards in 2009. Obrafour believed he was more deserving.

This resulted in one of the most memorable feuds the Ghanaian music landscape has ever witnessed, with Obrafour challenging Okyeame Kwame to a never-honored street rap battle.

In 2011, after Obrafour had apologised for his actions, Okyeame Kwame explained that he declined Obrafour’s challenge because winning Artist of the Year was sufficient at the time.

Okyeame Kwame has contributed to education and the promotion of erudition, with some Ghanaian universities studying his rap lyrics (which include didactic themes, social consciousness, and poetry).

Since 2009, Kwame has been married to Annica Nsiah-Apau, with whom he shares two children, Sir Kwame Bota and Sante Antwiwaa.

Two of his younger siblings are also rappers, performing under the stage names Flowking Stone and Kunta Kinte. Together, they are known as Bradez.
