Theresa Kufuor’s One Week Memorial Service Slated For October 11

The office of former President John Agyekum Kufour has announced that Wednesday, October 11, has been designated as the day to commemorate the one-week anniversary of the passing of former First Lady, Theresa Kufuor.

Mrs Kufuor served in the position from 2001 to 2009 and passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023. Since her passing, government officials, political figures, and members of the public have visited the Kufuor family residence in Peduase to offer their condolences and support.

In a statement issued by Dr. Kwabena Osei-Adubofour, senior aide and spokesperson for the former President, it was noted that visits to offer condolences and commiserations should be completed by Monday, October 9, to allow for a day of preparation for the memorial service, which will be held at the Peduase residence.

Theresa Kufuor was the esteemed wife of John Kufuor, the second President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, and a former First Lady of Ghana. With a background as a retired nurse and midwife, she began her education at the Catholic Convent, OLA, in Keta, located in the Volta Region of Ghana.

She furthered her studies in London, where she obtained her Registered General Nurse qualification from the Southern Hospital Group of Nursing in Edinburgh, Scotland. Theresa and John Kufuor’s union commenced when they met at a Republic Day Anniversary Dance in London in 1961, and they subsequently married in 1962 when John was 23 years old.

Together, they have been blessed with five children: J. Addo Kufuor, Nana Ama Gyamfi, Saah Kufuor, Agyekum Kufuor, and Owusu Afriyie Kufuor. As a devoted Roman Catholic, Theresa is not only a mother of five but also a proud grandmother of eight.

Despite her significant role as the First Lady of Ghana for eight years, spanning from 2001 to 2009, Theresa has maintained a modest presence in the political sphere. However, in 2007, she actively advocated for policy changes in the Government’s white paper on Educational Reforms, specifically aiming to implement UNESCO’s Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) program for kindergarten children.
