Theresa Kufuor: Former First Lady Confirmed Dead At 88

According to reliable sources, Mrs. Theresa Kufuor, the wife of former President John Kufuor, who served as the Fourth Republic President of Ghana, has regrettably passed away.

The former First Lady peacefully departed at the age of 88, surrounded by her loved ones and cherished friends. Family sources have now confirmed her demise and are preparing to issue an official statement to announce this unfortunate event, which occurred earlier today, Sunday, October 1st, 2023.

In light of this saddening news, numerous close family members and well-wishers have gathered at the residence of the former First couple in the Airport Residential Area to express their heartfelt condolences to Mr Kufuor during this difficult time.

Theresa Kufuor is the esteemed wife of John Kufuor, the second President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, and a former First Lady of Ghana. With a background as a retired nurse and midwife, she began her education at the Catholic Convent, OLA, in Keta, located in the Volta Region of Ghana.

She furthered her studies in London, where she obtained her Registered General Nurse qualification from the Southern Hospital Group of Nursing in Edinburgh, Scotland. Theresa and John Kufuor’s union commenced when they met at a Republic Day Anniversary Dance in London in 1961, and they subsequently married in 1962 when John was 23 years old.

Together, they have been blessed with five children: J. Addo Kufuor, Nana Ama Gyamfi, Saah Kufuor, Agyekum Kufuor, and Owusu Afriyie Kufuor. As a devoted Roman Catholic, Theresa is not only a mother of five but also a proud grandmother of eight.

Despite her significant role as the First Lady of Ghana for eight years, spanning from 2001 to 2009, Theresa has maintained a modest presence in the political sphere. However, in 2007, she actively advocated for policy changes in the Government’s white paper on Educational Reforms, specifically aiming to implement UNESCO’s Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) program for kindergarten children.
