What Happened When Alan And Bawumia Met At Theresa Kufuor’s One-Week Ceremony

Alan Kyerematen and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia smiled at each other during their first public encounter since Kyerematen’s resignation from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) last month.

While Bawumia is seeking the NPP’s nomination for president in 2024, the former minister of trade has declared his intention to run as an independent candidate.

On October 11, 2023, the two of them met at the Eastern Region town of Peduase for the one-week celebration of Theresa Kufuor, the former first lady of Ghana. In a photo that Samira Bawumia, the nation’s second lady, shared on social media, the two presidential candidates, both wearing black, shook hands, displaying a spirit of unity despite their political rivalry.

On Sunday, October 1, 2023, Theresa Kufuor passed away at the age of 87. On Thursday, November 16, 2023, following a state-led funeral, she will be laid to rest.

Theresa Kufuor is the esteemed wife of John Kufuor, the second President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, and a former First Lady of Ghana. With a background as a retired nurse and midwife, she began her education at the Catholic Convent, OLA, in Keta, located in the Volta Region of Ghana.

She furthered her studies in London, where she obtained her Registered General Nurse qualification from the Southern Hospital Group of Nursing in Edinburgh, Scotland. Theresa and John Kufuor’s union commenced when they met at a Republic Day Anniversary Dance in London in 1961, and they subsequently married in 1962, when John was 23 years old.

Together, they have been blessed with five children: J. Addo Kufuor, Nana Ama Gyamfi, Saah Kufuor, Agyekum Kufuor, and Owusu Afriyie Kufuor. As a devoted Roman Catholic, Theresa is not only a mother of five but also a proud grandmother of eight.
