Our Hands Are Clean – Charterhouse Reacts To Amakye Dedes Claim Of Being Forced To Crown Kuami Eugene As King Of Highlife

The organisers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), Charterhouse Production Ltd., have denied knowledge of allegations made by the legendary Amakye Dede to the effect that he was pressured into naming Kuami Eugene as the next king of highlife in 2019.

In the latest entertainment news today, the head of public events and communication at Charterhouse, Robert Klah, responded to Amakye Dede’s claims on the Asaase Breakfast Show on June 15, stating that Charterhouse was not involved in planning the crowning session.

He stressed that while they do give a stage for artistes and their teams to exhibit their skills and creativity at the VGMA, they do not have direct control over or manage the ceremony itself.

“We did not orchestrate any crowning session. So I am a bit lost when it comes to the assertion that event organisers are responsible… We work with a team, so you give them an opportunity, they create what they want to do, and the only thing is that you want to ensure that whatever they are going to present is not distasteful, so they get there and perform their act, and you move on,” he said.

On the 14th of June, 2023 edition of the Asaase Breakfast Show, Amakye Dede opened up about the events that led up to the crowning of Kuami Eugene. He made it clear that giving the title to Kuami Eugene was not what he desired or planned to do but because had to carry out the act upon insistence of someone whose identity he failed to disclose.

Amakye Dede said that he was hesitating to take part in the ceremony, but in the end and against his will, he performed the coronation.

“Though I did that, it was not my will to do so. But they forced me to crown Kuami Eugene; that is the reason why I did that because I even gave the crown they handed over to me to someone to put it down, but they later said, no, I have to crown him, and I did it,” he claimed.
