Over 350 Ghanaians Apply For Guinness World Record Attempt

Ghanaians and West Africans are embracing a newfound passion for setting Guinness World Records, with activities ranging from cookathons to singathons.

People are showcasing an unusual enthusiasm in the region through everything from cookathons to singathons. The record-breaking enthusiasm is being driven by many known endeavours, such as the cookathon organised by Hilda Baci of Nigeria, the singathon by Afua Asantewaa of Ghana, and the ongoing cookathon led by Chef Faila.

According to Guinness World Records data, there has been a significant increase in applications from Ghana since July 2023. A total of 355 applications have been submitted, with a notable spike in December 2023 (251 applications) and continuing into January 2024 with 80 more.

In an exclusive statement to JoyNews Editor Fred Smith, a spokesperson for Guinness World Record, Alina Polianskaya, expressed excitement over the trend. However, she cautioned that while many apply, only a select few achieve the coveted record status, with approximately 95% of applications falling short.

“It has been amazing to see the enthusiasm for record-breaking in the past year and we look forward to seeing even more success to come… For context, only a small percentage of applications go on to become records, with around 95% of applications not converting to records,” as quoted by myjoyonline.
