Quota system of Admission Returns To Colleges Of Education For 2022/2023 Academic Year

All 46 public colleges of education in Ghana have been allocated a specific number of admissions for the 2022/2023 academic year.

In all, some 12,002 prospective teacher trainees are to be admitted into the Colleges of Education for the 2022/2023 academic year, according to a list released by Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission in a letter to the National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), gave out the list of Colleges of Education with their respective admission quota.

The previous NDC government scrapped the payment of allowances to trainee teachers and nurses in the 2013/2014 academic year, and replaced it with loans from the Student Loan Trust Fund.

It argued that this will increase enrolment in the various colleges of education and reduce the financial burden on government.

The government at the time claimed that the abolition of the allowances had increased enrolment in the colleges of education. They were of the view that the quota system at the time restricted admissions due to financial considerations.

The incumbent NPP government reintroduced the allowance, but without the quota system until now.
