R. Kelly Sentenced to 20 Years For Child Sex Crimes
A judge in Chicago has condemned R. Kelly to 20 years in prison for his federal sexual assault case. On Thursday, February 22, the disgraced R&B artist made an appearance in Illinois court, where he was informed of his 20-year sentence.
According to The New York Times, Kells won when the judge decided that all but one year of the 30-year sentence he’s presently serving in New York on racketeering charges will be served concurrently.
On charges of enticing juveniles into sex and obstructing justice, he was found not guilty. His federal sentence should be added to his New York prison sentence, according to the prosecution, because he is a risk to society and “lacked remorse.”
Although Judge Leinenweber decided against it, he acknowledged that if the federal trial had taken place before his conviction in New York City in September 2021, he would have received a much harsher punishment.
The Chicago native was eventually found guilty by a grand jury of six of the 13 federal charges against him, including three child pornography charges for the alleged sexual abuse of four females, three of whom were minors.
In addition, Kelly was found guilty of making three videos of himself sexually assaulting his goddaughter, who was 14 years old, leading to the filing of three additional charges for making sex tapes with a juvenile. The Pied Piper of R&B was also forced to pay $42,000 in restitution to one of the victims in order to cover their therapy expenses.
“I’m not a vengeful or hateful person, but I highly suggest you spend your time in prison reflecting,” one of the victims, who identified as Nia, said in court on Thursday.
