Smart Joker’s Biography

Smart Joker, whose real name is Michael Akala Omuka is a Kenyan comedian and singer who made his television début on the 2013 Churchill show.

In high school, he was dubbed “Smart Joker.” The ‘Kumnyamnyam’ squad used to tell him that his jokes are amusing and his presentations are intelligent, so he began to call himself Smart Joker.

Smart Joker holds a certificate in Broadcast Journalism from the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication.

Smart Joker’s Career

To survive, Smart Joker performed menial tasks such as labouring on construction sites and unclogging sewage lines. Nick D (Nicodemus Odhiambo), a fellow comedian, persuaded him to audition for the Churchill performance at the Carnivore grounds while he was performing a traditional dance at a Kibera-based NGO called Shinning Hope For Communities (SHOFCO).

During this period, the comedian had no interest in comedy shows. In fact, he only knew of Eric Omondi because others mentioned him. Nonetheless, they both attended the auditions and were accepted. This was the beginning of his path to renown.

The ever-cheerful man began performing on the Churchill programme only a few days after his audition, something he never anticipated. The audience idolised him and his fictitious companion “Shimonjero.” He would entertain the audience with humorous stories. Throughout his third performance, he instructed his companion on how to transition from analogue to digital. He even released a song on the subject and received support from CCCK for the analog-to-digital transition. Since then, the comedian has worked in the Churchill programme with occasional breaks.

The greatest difficulty is performing a comedy that the audience does not enjoy. In an interview with Milele FM, he describes a time when he was asked to perform at a performance for which he was paid kes95,000, but no one found his act to be amusing. However, he claims that it wasn’t because he wasn’t amusing, but because the audience was intoxicated.

Smart Joker’s Marital Status

The witty comedian is a happily married man to Mercy Warima Kagiri and a father of two lovely kids, Keziah Mwendwa Akala and Emanuella Khalumba Akala. He obviously prefers to keep them out of the limelight. In an exclusive interview published by mpasho on 1st December 2017 the comedian says the following about his family:

“Mimi sina girlfriend​ Mimi nimeoa. Na venye nimeoa, familia yangu ni kama figo yangu. Siwezi expose figo yangu. So familia yangu iko kwa nyumba. Haya mambo ya Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, YouTube. Those are just mambo na social media.” ( I do not have a girlfriend I am married. And since am married my family is like my kidney. I cannot expose my kidney. Therefore, my family is in the house. Things to do with Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, YouTube… are just social media.
