Emmanuel Adebayor has joined the conversation regarding Ghana’s disappointing performance at the upcoming AFCON.
The team’s chances of advancing in the competition were dashed after a 2-2 draw with Mozambique in their last match. Despite starting strong with a two-goal lead, the Black Stars suffered a late collapse, allowing the Mambas to equalize at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium.
As experts and enthusiasts analyze the reasons behind Ghana’s underwhelming performance, which has been a recurring theme in recent tournaments, Adebayor added his opinion saying:
“I’m not surprised, I’m rather disappointed. Coming into this game, they [Ghana] knew they had their destiny in their hands, they knew they had to win, they knew this was a key game for the country but the way they played is just unbelievable,” Adebayor told George Addo Jr.
“They played with no motivation, they played with no communication, they played like they’re just here for fun and for me it’s completely wrong.
“I don’t know where they want to go because I think the best place for them is to fly back to Ghana, so that they can all go back to their clubs. If Ghana even qualifies, what are they going to do in the next stage? he told BBC’s George Addo Jnr.
Ghana’s elimination from the AFCON tournament has sparked outrage among Ghanaians, who are now calling for the dismissal of head coach Chris Hughton.
Fans are growing increasingly frustrated with the team’s poor performances in recent years and the performance against Mozambique is the height of it all.
In their latest match against Mozambique, Ghana was leading 2-0 until the 90th minute, but two late goals from Mozambique resulted in a 2-2 draw and dashed Ghana’s hopes of reaching the Last 16.
Despite finishing third in Group B with two points, it remains uncertain whether Ghana will advance to the next round. Cape Verde, who finished first in the group after a 2-2 draw against Egypt, and Egypt, who finished second, have secured their spots in the knockout stages.
Ghana’s early penalty goal by Jordan Ayew and his subsequent conversion of a second penalty seemed to secure their victory, but a penalty awarded to Mozambique in the first minute of optional time and a late equalizer from Renildo Mandava turned the tables.
Both Ghana and Mozambique ended the group stages with two points each.
