A courageous teacher is said to have restrained a teenage girl in an armlock after two teachers and a student were stabbed, prompting a code red lockdown at a Welsh school.
Fiona Elias and Liz Hopkin were identified as the two victims of the knife attack at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Ammanford, South Wales, at the end of morning break on Wednesday, April 24.
The girl was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remained in custody during the early hours of Thursday.
The chaotic incident occurred at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman (Amman Valley School) on Wednesday, just after morning break. Reports indicate that one teacher was stabbed in the neck and had to be airlifted from the school premises.
Another teacher and a student were also injured, although their injuries were not life-threatening, according to Dyfed-Powys Police.
Darrel Campbell, a teacher who is rumoured to be the chairman of a local rugby club, bravely intervened, disarmed the alleged assailant, and restrained her in an armlock until emergency services arrived. Fortunately, he emerged from the incident unharmed.
Leader of Carmarthenshire County Council, Darren Price, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to praise the teachers, staff and pupils at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman for the way they have responded to this shocking incident.”
The school was placed on lockdown following a code red alarm that was activated via the PA system. Students and staff took shelter in classrooms, with one student reportedly jumping over the school fence to seek safety.
The lockdown lasted approximately four hours, from 11:20 am to 3:20 pm, causing a prolonged and tense period for parents who anxiously awaited news while embracing their children upon their return.
Video footage of the incident has been circulating online, with reports from various newspapers detailing a video in which a distressed student can be heard mentioning a stabbing incident.
All three victims were transported to the hospital with stab wounds, although Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed that their injuries were not life-threatening.
