Volta Region Flood: Declare A State Of Emergency Now – John Mahama To Govt

National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama has urged the government to declare a state of emergency in areas of the Volta Region devastated by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.

The former president thinks that attention should be given first to the areas that have been hit hardest by the flooding caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

John Mahama wrote on Wednesday, October 18, saying, “I recommend to Government to declare a State of Emergency in the affected areas and request relief assistance from our bilateral and multilateral partners immediately.”

North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa also criticised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his remarks to those affected by the Akosombo Dam spill.

According to him, the president’s comments were completely irrelevant to the problems of the people. In light of the current flood, Mr. Ablakwa stressed that now is not the time to discuss political affiliation.

Speaking to TV3, Mr. Ablakwa said, “I do not think that this is the time to be talking about votes, this is a humanitarian crisis, people have been submerged, entire communities have been submerged under the water, and the VRA continues to spill.

On Monday, October 16, Nana Akufo-Addo met with residents of Mepe who had been impacted by the flood caused by the dam spillage and told them that he is the president for everyone, regardless of their voting record.
