Akufo-Addo Has Packed Judiciary With Pro-NPP Judges – Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, a former president of Ghana, has accused current leader Akufo-Addo and his administration of packing the judiciary with supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to John Mahama, the current government has filled the judiciary with friends and family members.

He made these remarks during the closing ceremony of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) third annual Lawyers Conference on Saturday, September 2, saying that the party had taken this action to help its members dodge accountability once they leave power. He said that there are about 80 of these judges in the system and that the number could go over 100.

“Currently, the judiciary is packed with NPP-inclined judges because this government has carried out a deliberate policy of putting their people onto the bench… He (Akufo-Addo) has appointed the biggest number of judges onto the bench; it is more than 80, towards 100, and counting. You can see what the current president has done.”

As a result, John Mahama encouraged party members to pursue judicial jobs in order to even the odds. He insisted that was the only way to fix the problem.

“He has packed the court, and we know they have packed the court because they want to avoid accountability after they have left office. So, I encourage some of you to look at careers on the bench so that we can balance out what the current situation is. We must be prepared as NDC legal persons to also go onto the bench so that we can balance out the judiciary,” he added.
