Chris Rock Declines Offer To Host Golden Globes 2024 Awards

Chris Rock has turned down the opportunity to host the Golden Globes, along with four other well-known comedians, as reported by CNN.

It is possible that Rock’s decision stems from the infamous incident where he was slapped by Will Smith during the live broadcast of the 2022 Oscars.

In addition to Rock, comedian and “Beef” star Ali Wong was also approached but declined the hosting gig, according to sources. Furthermore, Will Arnett, Sean Hayes, and Jason Bateman, who co-host the podcast “SmartLess,” reportedly rejected a joint offer to host.

As for the possibility of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, who have successfully co-hosted the Golden Globes four times in the past, it seems unlikely that they would take on the role again. A source close to Poehler and Fey stated that they are done with hosting.

The upcoming Golden Globes ceremony is expected to be attended by several big-name stars, including Jennifer Aniston, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert DeNiro, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman, Selena Gomez, and Emma Stone. However, the question remains whether the event will have a host or not.

Given that the Globes will be aired on CBS this year, there is a possibility that the network will choose from its own talent pool for the hosting duties. Names like Stephen Colbert, Taylor Tomlinson (host of the new show “After Midnight”), or the stars of “The Neighborhood,” Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield, have been suggested. However, it is unlikely that Cedric the Entertainer would take on two Globes-related gigs in a row, considering he already hosted the announcement of the nominations.

Considering that the Oscars will be broadcasted on ABC and Jimmy Kimmel has already been named as this year’s host, it would be an unprecedented move for CBS to have their own host for the Globes as well. The CBS comedy “Ghosts” has also been successful, attracting 6.2 million viewers for the end of Season 2. However, its stars Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar are not widely recognized household names.

“It’s a thankless job,” one celebrity publicist told the outlet, while another said about the gig, “It’s not worth it. There are a lot of politics. It’s not easy and it’s not fun anymore.”

Version 1: The 2023 Globes, hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael, experienced a significant decline in viewership, with only 6.3 million people tuning in, as reported by Nielsen data. This is a stark contrast to the 6.9 million viewers during the peak of the pandemic in 2021 and the impressive 18.3 million viewers in 2020.

Given the current circumstances, the Golden Globes are in dire need of a success. However, the absence of a host so close to the ceremony does not bode well for their chances.

Adding to their challenges, the Golden Globes are also grappling with a cloud of scandal and controversy surrounding the lack of diversity within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which almost led to the cancellation of the 2022 ceremony.

In an attempt to gather insights and perspectives, The Post reached out to Rock, Wong, Arnett, Hayes, and Bateman for their comments on the matter.
