Chris Rock Finally Addresses Will Smith’s Oscars Slap In Live Stand-Up Routine

Chris Rock has finally addressed the infamous Oscars slap by Will Smith in a brutal stand-up routine for Netflix’s first live special, “Selective Outrage.”

Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head during the 94th annual Academy Awards when he suggested she be cast in G.I. Jane 2. After Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes in response to the remark, her husband approached the stage and struck the comedian across the face before returning to his seat and yelling profanities at the presenter.

Rock stated that Pinkett Smith’s animosity stemmed from a few years prior, when she urged him to skip the Oscars because her husband was overlooked for his role in “Concussion.”

During his stand-up routine, the comedian criticized Will Smith, stating that he was not a victim and that he deserved to be slapped for making fun of someone with alopecia. He also criticized Pinkett Smith for urging him to skip the Oscars while she herself attended.

The incident overshadowed what was intended to be a celebration of the incredible work of numerous Hollywood individuals that year. David Rubin, president and CEO of the Academy, issued a statement condemning Will Smith’s unacceptable and harmful behavior.

Nonetheless, some viewers defended Will Smith’s actions, arguing that they were warranted in light of Rock’s insensitive joke about Pinkett Smith’s hair.

Several times on his comedy shows since the incident, Chris Rock has addressed it. Up until now, he has maintained a near-silence on the issue, but he has now addressed it through his stand-up routine, available to watch on Netflix.
