Driver Jailed 5 Years For Posing As Afari Gyan’s Son, Defrauding Prophetess

Augustine Yeboah, a driver who falsely presented himself as the son of Ghana’s former Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, has been sentenced to five years in prison for defrauding a Prophetess and 12 other individuals.

The verdict was delivered by the Circuit Court in Accra, presided over by Her Honour Afia Owusua Appiah.

Yeboah, residing in Amasaman, Accra, was found guilty of defrauding by false pretense after misrepresenting himself as a travel agent and claiming to be Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan’s son. The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Amoah Richard, led the case, which resulted in Yeboah’s conviction.

The court heard that Yeboah, in December 2021, came into contact with the complainant, Prophetess Helena Appiah, through a church member. He falsely claimed to be a travel agent who had assisted numerous people, including a well-known actress, in traveling abroad. Additionally, he claimed to be the son of Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, the former chairman of the Electoral Commission.

Yeboah informed the complainant that there was a travel package to the United States of America at a cost of GH¢12,000. The Prophetess, convinced by his representations, organized a conference for Yeboah to meet with 12 interested individuals. Yeboah agreed to accept GH¢7,000 instead of the initial GH¢12,000, collecting a total of GH¢113,500 for purported travel documents and attire for their trip.

Despite promising to deliver the necessary documents within a week, Yeboah failed to do so, providing flimsy excuses. Subsequent investigations by the police revealed that there was no legitimate travel package, and Yeboah was not in a position to assist them in traveling abroad. The representation of being Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan’s son and helping the actress ‘Kyeiwaa’ travel abroad was also found to be false.

After thorough investigations, Augustine Yeboah was charged with the offense of defrauding by false pretense and subsequently sentenced to five years in prison.
