Ghana’s Wiyaala and Atongo Zimba have been recognized for their exceptional musical talents by the World Listening Post. After an extensive 2-year evaluation of songs from various artistes, countries, and languages, their songs have been deemed among the greatest of all time.
Alan Tigay, the publisher, explained the criteria of the selection by saying, “It has been to judge, as faithfully as possible, all the songs and artists I surveyed in the context of their cultural milieu and to imagine what music critics and listeners in any given country or language community would consider the greatest. I looked for multiple sources on every element of every entry, but sometimes a single source was all found”
Wiyaala’s track Village Sex secured a spot on the prestigious list at number 419. This captivating song, released in 2018, is a remake of a traditional village tune, showcasing Wiyaala’s ability to infuse her unique style into existing melodies. It finds itself in good company, nestled between the renowned Russian group Pussy Riot’s Chaika and the iconic Swedish pop supergroup Abba’s Dancing Queen.
However, leading the pack on this esteemed ranking is Atongo Zimba’s 2005 hit record titled “No Beer in Heaven.” Atongo Zimba shares that this song serves as a cautionary message to those who indulge excessively in alcohol consumption.
He highlights how people often take advantage of occasions such as parties, funerals, and other social events where free drinks are readily available, leading to harmful consequences.
Atongo Zimba emphasizes the importance of moderation, stating that if one desires to partake in something regularly, it should be done within reasonable limits to ensure a long and fulfilling life.
He humorously adds that those who disregard this advice and meet an untimely demise due to excessive drinking will find themselves in heaven, where unfortunately, there is no beer. Meanwhile, their earthly friends will continue to relish in the joy of consuming this beloved beverage.
