It Was Parliament’s 30th Anniversary Party – Minority Leader Speaks About Dinner With Afenyo Markin

The Minority Leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has assured NDC members of his unwavering loyalty to the party.

He insists that he is not going to do anything that might jeopardise the party’s goals. Dr. Ato Forson said on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Tuesday, August 8, that he will keep holding the government accountable. He insisted on that point, saying he would challenge any wrongdoing on the part of the government.

The Minority Leader and the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, were seen on camera enjoying dinner together in a recent viral video. This offended some NDC party members, which prompted the Minority Leader to provide an explanation for the content of the video and the prevalent interpretation.

“Afenyo-Markin didn’t invite me for the dinner. It was part of Parliament’s 30-year anniversary, so it is important to clear the air. I want to assure NDC supporters that I remain loyal, I am committed to our course, and I will do whatever it takes to hold the government accountable for whatever they do that is against the country. In fact, I will hold their feet to the fire of accountability.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I can smile with you, but when it gets to my work, there is a Chinese wall, and anyone who knows me knows that, and I stay true to that. That is how I am defined. That is me. I can’t change because that is what I am made of. So, I can be so nice to you, but it doesn’t stop me from doing my work, and I will do my work judiciously.”

Dr. Ato Forson, meanwhile, has urged his fellow Ghanaians to embrace multiparty rule. He argues that members of parliament (MPs) are not enemies just because they come from opposing political parties.

“Parliament of Ghana, this year, we are celebrating our 30-year anniversary of multiparty democracy, and I have said and am on record to have said that since independence, we have had four constitutions. In between, they toppled the constitution for us to have military rule and all of that.”

“The country has gone through some ups and downs. So, this democracy is the most enduring that all of us have to project for its 30 years of regime so far because it is the one that has given us the opportunity to sit and jaw-jaw and the one that has given the opportunity for you and your children to contribute your quota towards the nation’s building.”

“Multiparty democracy gives diverse ideas to political parties to express their views; that doesn’t make us enemies. As I am sitting here criticising the Bank of Ghana, if they appear before the committee and they are doing well, I will praise them, and when they do wrong, I must be able to say so. Is that not it? And the need for us to work together to build our country,” he added.
