Kyei-Mensah Bonsu States That A New Constitution Is Required To Reduce The Number Of Ministers

Parliament’s majority leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has proposed a measure to limit a president’s cabinet size.

President Akufo-Addo has been told to reduce the size of his government by political opponents, non-government organizations, academics, the media, and the general public.

The Suame MP made these remarks at the beginning of the celebration of Ghana’s parliamentary democracy’s 30th anniversary on Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, said at the same event that democracy needs more than free and fair elections and smooth changes of power.

After eight straight elections and four administration turnovers between the NPP and NDC, Mr. Bagbin believes Ghana must focus on establishing democratic institutions “if we want to have a durable democracy.”

He remarked that the contributions and sacrifices of previous Speakers have been crucial in fortifying the foundations of democracy in Ghana.

He informed parliamentarians that Ghana will host the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) annual conference from August 30 to September 6, 2023.

The event will focus on the past 30 years of parliamentary democracy in the Fourth Republic. The MP representing Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, is leading the committee tasked with organizing the year-long event.
