NDC winning Assin North by-election is a wake-up call – NPP

Party members and leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) think the results of the Assin North by-election should serve as a wake-up call, prompting the NPP to adopt an additional measured approach for upcoming elections.

Despite the party’s high hopes, the NDC’s candidate won the election in Assin. On Tuesday, June 27, 2023, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the election for a seat in parliament to James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who received 17,245 votes (57.56 percent) to Opoku’s 12,630 votes (42.15); Sefenu Bernice Enyonam of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) received 87 votes (0.29 percent).

The party’s General Secretary, Justin Koduah Frimpong, issued a statement asking party members to share their thoughts and suggestions with the national secretariat.

“The Party views the outcome of the by-election as a wake-up call, prompting us to evaluate our approach, make rational retrospective assessments, and conduct a thorough analysis. We urge our dedicated party supporters to submit their comments and recommendations to the national secretariat of the party for consideration and possible implementation,” parts of the statement reads.

In addition, the letter congratulated the NDC and its parliamentary candidate on their victory in the by-election.

“The Party extends its warmest congratulations to the National Democratic Congress and the Member of Parliament-elect for the Assin North Constituency on their electoral victory.”
