President Akufo-Addo Launches 2nd Phase Of Sinotruk Vehicle Assembly Plant

The second phase of the Sinotruk Vehicle Assembly Plant in Tema was officially opened on October 17, 2023, by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, marking a major step forward in Ghana’s ‘1-District-1-Factory’ initiative.

The new manufacturing facility is now producing commercial vehicles. At the same time, he laid the groundwork for the third and final phase of the Sinotruk Project, which, when finished, will turn Sinotruk Ghana Limited into a vertically integrated automaker in Ghana.

The President spoke highly of Sinotruk and expressed confidence in the future of Ghana’s truck assembly industry, which they see as a sign of economic recovery. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting an environment conducive to business expansion.

He praised the success of “1-District-1-Factory” in helping companies like Sinotruk transform from importers to manufacturers.

The new assembly plant can produce three times as many trucks per year, from 850 to 3000. These trucks will be both heavy- and light-duty models, and they will be assembled from semi-knocked-down kits that hold to international quality and safety standards.

The president praised the expansion for its positive effects on society and the economy. It will increase the company’s direct workforce from 356 to 700, and it will generate 1,000 additional jobs indirectly. Artisans in assembly, repair, and maintenance will benefit from the establishment of a modern training centre on the premises. This is a major improvement for the automotive industry in Ghana, and it will help the country’s economy expand.
