Gyedu-Blay Ambolley Apologises To Okyeame Kwame After Losing Lawsuit

Veteran Ghanaian High-life musician Gyedu-Blay Ambolley has apologised to his younger colleague Okyeame Kwame after he lost a defamatory lawsuit filed against him by the rapper.

According to a report filed by Graphic Online, the case, which was settled through an arbitration process that was later adopted by the courts as a consent judgement on March 23, 2023, required Ambolley to issue a public apology retracting his defamatory comments against Kwame.

Ambolley explained in a statement published on LinkedIn that he erred in several aspects about the usage of cash granted by the Ghanaian government to the Musicians Association of Ghana (MUSIGA) during an interview on 3FM on February 22, 2020.

He expressly retracted his earlier statements that Okyeame Kwame had received a personal loan from MUSIGA funds and instead stated that MUSIGA had entered into an agreement with Midland Bank to provide security/collateral for loans to support artists and that Okyeame Kwame had applied for and been granted a loan from the bank, which he had since paid back in full.

“I was mistaken concerning some of the details of the matter, particularly with respect to my colleague musician and MUSIGHA member Kwame Nsiah Apau also known as Okyeame Kwame and I wish to correct and clarify those facts,” the post read

In the course of an interview on 3FM on the 22nd of February 2020 concerning the use of some funds donated by the Government of Ghana to the Musicians Association of Ghana (MUSIGHA), I was mistaken concerning some of the details of the matter, particularly with respect to my colleague musician and MUSIGHA member Kwame Nsiah Apau also known as Okyeame Kwame and I wish to correct and clarify those facts as follows: Obour did not give Okyeame Kwame a personal loan from MUSIGHA funds.

To support artists and enable them access to loans, MUSIGHA entered an arrangement with Midland Bank and provided security/collateral for the arrangement. Okyeame Kwame only took advantage of the initiative and applied for a loan from Midland Bank which he was given.

He has informed me that he has since paid back the bank in full. To the extent that my earlier statements may have affected the reputation of Okyeame Kwame, I apologise and state that the errors in my statements were not made maliciously.

Gyedu-Blay Ambolley and Okyeame Kwame feud

Gyedu Blay Ambolley is reported to have stated that the former president of the MUSIGA Bice Osei Kuffour (Obour), gave ₵50,000 to his close friends, one of which Okyeame Kwame was a legatee.

Keep in mind that in 2020 Okyeame Kwame used Facebook to serve a writ on fellow musician Gyedu Blay Ambolley.

Gyedu Blay Ambolley was sued by Okyeame Kwame for remarks the latter believed to be defamatory. Through his attorneys, Okyeame Kwame gave Ambolley notice to retract the remarks, but it appears that was not done. This led to the need for the current lawsuit, which requires Ambolley to appear in court.

Mr Gyedu claims to have documentation showing which musicians received ₵50,000 loans from the previous MUSIGA president Obour. Speaking further about the subject, Gyedu Blay stated his displeasure with Okyeame Kwame, a ‘Junior Rapper’, for taking him to court over his debt claims.
