Kwabena Agyepong ‘Exposes’ Bawumia

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has claimed that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia worked as personal assistant for former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Paul Acquah.

He revealed that when they visited the Castle for meetings, Dr. Bawumia would often assist in carrying Dr. Acquah’s books

Responding to rumours that former President John Agyekum Kufuor had the current vice president, Dr. Bawumia, appointed to the BoG, Kwabena Agyepong said that the rumours were not true.

In the account given on Kofi TV, Agyepong recounts the circumstances behind Dr. Bawumia’s appointment as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank. Agyepong asserts that Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the incumbent Governor at the time, was responsible for introducing Bawumia to the bank.

“It is also not true that President Kufuor was the one that brought him into the Bank of Ghana. We (the NPP government) came into office in 2001, at the time, Dr. Duffuor was the governor of the Central Bank, and the president allowed him to complete his tenure. It was Duffuor that brought Bawumia to the bank; it was after Duffuor that Paul Acquah was brought from the IMF. At the time, Bawumia was at the Research Department, so Bawumia became like a PA to him,” he said.

“He used to carry Acquah’s books when they came for meetings at the castle, and I sat in those meetings… does it mean working in a bank makes you a party person? He was hired during the NDC era; does that make him an NDC person?” Agyepong added.
