NPP Strongly Condemns NDC’s Request To Have Bryan Acheampong Arrested

The New Patriotic Party opposed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) requests to have Bryan Acheampong, minister of food and agriculture, arrested for saying that the NPP will remain in power at all costs.

After participating in a health walk called “Walk to Build a Better Ghana” with supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Saturday, April 8, 2023, in Mpreaso-Kwahu in the Eastern Region, Bryan Acheampong declared that the NPP will never cede power to the opposition NDC in 2024.

“NDC party will collapse. If the NDC dares to use threats, violence, and foolishness in the 2024 election, we will let them know we have the men. we will show NDC that we have the men if they want to do intimidate, harass us or do anything foolish during the 2024 elections…. It will not happen that we will hand over power to NDC. We’l use any means for NPP to stay in power.”

In responds to these comments the National Democratic Congress (NDC) released a statement through general secretary Fifi Kwetey requesting the immediate arrest of Bryan Acheampong for his “treasonous” remarks.

“As the political tradition that ushered in our nation’s stable constitutional order, the NDC will do whatever it takes to resist the misrule and machination of the oppressor and thus protect and preserve our democracy.” Kwetey stated.

“We urge the Ghana Police Service to act with dispatch in this matter. We recall the alacrity with which it recently apprehended and charged the Suame Constituency Youth Organiser of the NDC for expressing views that were deemed to be inciteful.”

“No one is in any doubt that the statement of Bryan Acheampong is even more incendiary and subversive. We, therefore, expect the same level of speedy action from the Ghana Police Service in arresting Bryan Acheampong and bringing him to book.” he added.

The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, released a statement after the National Democratic Congress’s requests to have Bryan Acheampong arrested on April 10, 2024, saying that prominent members of the NDC, such as former President John Dramani Mahama, had more damning comments.

According to Justin Kodua, Mahama should be the one to be jailed because his comments were the inspiration for Bryan Acheampong’s remarks.

Part of the statement reads:

“The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has sighted a flippant statement signed by the General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), on comments made by Bryan Acheampong, Member of Parliament for the Abetifi Constituency and Minister for Food and Agriculture while addressing some party supporters in the Eastern Region which the NDC describes as treasonable.”

“The NPP finds the NDC’s statement not only ill- founded, hypocritical, illogical, and baseless, but also one that lacks contextual substance for the consumption of the discerning Ghanaians who are not oblivious to the modus operandi of the main opposition party in deliberately putting diabolic and mischievous slant to an otherwise innocuous comments such as the comments made by the Member of Parliament, in furtherance of their selfish political interest.”
