Public Accounts Committee Gives NIA Boss One Month To Refund GH¢98k

Following a hearing before the Public Accounts Committee, Prof. Kenneth Attafuah, the Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), has been instructed to reimburse over GH¢98,000 within one month.

The amount in question was deducted from the NIA’s account as a penalty for delayed transfer of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions.

Despite explanations provided by Prof. Attafuah regarding the delay in remitting SSNIT contributions, the committee deemed the explanations unacceptable.

“The recommendation states that you must repay the money, and it should be retrieved from both the Chief Executive and the Financial Controller.

“While you have explained the reasons for not paying the withheld money to SSNIT, the committee finds your explanation unacceptable,” the committee led by Ketu North MP, Clutse Avedzi recommended.

Thus, the committee has given Prof. Attafuah a one-month deadline to refund the amount, as stated by the Auditor General’s recommendation.

“Therefore, the Auditor General’s recommendation stands: the Chief Executive and the Financial Controller must refund the money to the recovery account of the Auditor General within one month,” the committee said.
